THE NEW NORMAL
Project type
Product design
The New Normal is a collection of food-serving tools that challenges conventional perceptions of portion size by proposing an alternative way of estimating food portions. Instead of relying on calorie counting or standardized measurements, the project explores hand sizes and gestures as intuitive, human-centered references for portioning food.
CHALLENGE
How might portion sizes be communicated in a way that feels more intuitive and human than calorie counts or standardized measurements?
APPROACH
The project explored the relationship between hand size, gesture, and perceived portion size through observation, experimentation, and physical prototyping. Different forms were developed and iterated to translate these everyday human references into a usable set of serving tools.
DESIGN PRINCIPLE
Rather than asking people to calculate portions, the objects use familiar bodily references to make portion estimation more immediate and understandable.
OUTCOME
A family of serving tools designed around different hand sizes and gestures, offering an alternative way to think about portioning food through physical interaction.
